Beth David

Space is limited – Last Year’s Tour of the Oak Glen Pavilion Sold Out

Congregation Beth David Tour and Lecture
Designed by Ken Haggard and Polly Cooper of the San Luis Sustainability Group, Congregation Beth David is the first LEED Certified synagogue in the world. The building embodies the Jewish doctrine of tikkun olam, the notion of repairing the world through human actions.  Congregation Beth David is built on a 92-acre site, of which 62 acres are reserved for wetlands and permanent open space.  The building features numerous high-performance green building features, including:

  • A photovoltaic array that provides 50 percent of electrical needs
  • Motion detector lights switches in all rooms
  • Extra thick concrete floors, concrete walls, straw-bale walls, and south-facing water tank walls to create thermal mass that stores heat from the sun and cools the building in summer
  • A computer-driven system that monitor exterior and interior climates to open or close 138 windows and skylights automatically for optimum airflow and temperature control
  • Individual room thermostats and gas fireplaces for supplemental heat in only the areas being used
  • Finish materials of non-toxic paint and carpeting, recycled newsprint insulation and “Pyrok” acoustical ceiling treatment

The Field Tour will be led by SLSG Co-Founder and Principal Architect Ken Haggard and will feature a presentation by Ken and Polly Cooper on the siting, design, construction and development of the elegant building and its many green and sustainable features.  Ken and Polly will be joined by Richard Beller, an architect and general building contractor, who served as the project’s Construction Manager.  Together, Ken, Polly and Richard represent more than 80 years of experience designing and building sustainable projects.

Also included is a tour of the building’s landscape of native plants.

Location/Time/Itinerary/Cost
The field tour will depart by van from the SLO Vet’s Hall parking lot at 1:45 p.m. and will return by 4:30.  Cost:  $40 per person or included in a Total Immersion Pass, Weekend Pass or Friday Day Pass.
