A recent Los Angeles Times article talked about the emerging “agrihood” movement, a trend by developers to design communities that center around sustainable farms rather than golf courses and swimming pools. The story featured a development called Sendero in south Orange County’s Rancho Mission Viejo development, which opened its doors last year.  Sendero has a quarter-acre community farm which will be a commercial operation that produces food for residents to buy and offers educational programs in planting, raising chickens and organic cooking. Shared garden beds populate a cul-de-sac and native California desert plants replace front lawns. According to experts interviewed in the article, the agrihood trend is responding to a yearning for urbanites to be reunited with nature.
